COVER STORY

Running A Good Race

For this Missouri job shop, it’s not about what you call the machine tool, it’s about how you use it. The shop considers multi-spindle turning as simply using more than one spindle in various configurations best suited to the production requirements of the application.

FEATURES

A Cool Way To Cool

With increasing regulations on handling and use of metalworking fluids, the industry needs to look at other options to help resolve the contradictions between the need for cooling lubrication and the requirements for cleaner, safer technology.

Boost Throughput With Multitasking

As a shop’s typical workload moves beyond high-production turned parts, new ways to reduce leadtimes and improve machining accuracy are evolving.

Energy Trends In Manufacturing

Every once in a while, I get to see a report from a branch of the United States government that reinforces my feeling that all of us in manufacturing are way ahead of the bureaucrats in Washington. This week, I received a Manufacturing Sector Report from the Environmental Protection Agency covering motor vehicle parts manufacturing. (View the report at www.epa.gov/sectors/energy/index.html.)

Measurement

Gaging Interest In Wireless

One area where wireless might provide an attractive alternative to wired solutions is in gaging for quality control. Collecting and analyzing data is becoming more and more pervasive.

OEM Recharges With Innovative Edge

You may have noticed a change in the way Tornos U.S. is operating. Since becoming president of Tornos U.S in June 2006, I have implemented sweeping changes that are at the heart of our drive for original thinking.

Turning Machines

OEM Transitions To Contract Manufacturer

An example of a perfect match, from one of the first customers Tier One landed, was a contract for 10,000 gearbox housings used in a stomach-suturing instrument. The process plan called for one operation on a CNC Swiss-type turning center and two additional operations on a CNC mill.

Time For A Change

The past century has witnessed significant advancements in cutting machines, cutting tools, machine controls, processing materials and coolant-lubricant chemistries. However, very little has changed with regards to the application of cooling lubrication. It's time for a change.
