Automated 3D Inspection Improves Productivity

Master3DGage integrates a Hexagon Metrology six-axis portable CMM with 3D, model-based inspection software.

Article From: 6/30/2010 Modern Machine Shop

Master3DGage integrates a Hexagon Metrology six-axis portable CMM with 3D, model-based inspection software. Designed to improve productivity and part quality, the hardware/software package automates the 3D inspection process and verifies manufactured parts directly to 3D CAD models anywhere on the shop floor. According to the company, first-article inspections can be completed in minutes.

The inspection process involves three steps: aligning the part to the 3D CAD model via probing to corresponding alignment targets on the model; inspecting the part in real-time via manual probing or automated inspection plans; and reporting inspection results via automatically generated HTML and Excel formats.

According to the company, this process eliminates dependence on 2D drawings as well as dozens of hand tools and gages. Additionally, it eliminates the need to route products away from the manufacturing process to fixed inspection areas. It also completes a fully digital 3D design, simulation, manufacturing and inspection workflow.
