PM's November 2016 Digital Edition is now available.

The November digital issue of Production Machining is now available, with emphasis topics of Lights-Out Manufacturing and CNC Single-Spindle. For our cover story, we go to an Oklahoma shop that is proving that lights-out machining is more seamless than ever before, with built-in safety systems and even the ability to switch from one part to another in the middle of the night. Our second feature looks at a shop that completely overhauled its processes using lean principles and automation to help improve production by nearly 90 percent.

In our Tech Brief section we detail the scudding process, which is 5-10 times faster than gear shaping and provides a surface finish and part quality superior to hobbing, shaping or broaching. We also examine spindle maintenance, showing that when a spindle is damaged, a detailed failure analysis report can determine the source so that it can be avoided in the future.

Our Case in Point this month covers a shop that implemented a specialized grinder and software to speed production of custom HSS and solid carbide rounds.
