A few years back, I attended the WorldSkills competition, which was held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is impressive and truly global. Sometimes called the Olympics of the skilled trades, WorldSkills includes a metalworking component along with virtually any other trade one can think of. Competitors compete for gold, silver and bronze medals to take back to their respective countries.

This year’s edition is being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from August 11-16. It is the largest international skills competition with young people from across the globe representing their country while competing to be the best in their chosen skill. Teams are selected through national competition held in the intervening 2 years between the WorldSkills competition.

At the Sao Paulo event, Mastercam is the official supplier to the four machining competitions: CNC turning, CNC milling, plastic die engineering and the manufacturing team challenge. The manufacturing challenge requires the teams to use Mastercam to produce parts machined on a lathe and milling machine that may be assembled into a workable product.

WorldSkills has come to symbolize the pinnacle of excellence in vocational training. Held every 2 years, hundreds of young skilled people, accompanied by their teachers and trainers, gather from all corners of the globe to compete before the public in the skills of their various trades and test themselves against demanding standards.

The 2017 edition of WorldSkills competition will be held in Abu Dhabi.
