The 34T triple-edged grooving insert from Horn is an alternative to the existing 312 grooving insert and features additional advantages. The precision-sintered grooving inserts can be used in grooving, side turning and parting-off applications without additional clamping elements. During clamping with the central screw, the cutting insert lines up precisely with the top of the holder. The holder’s insert pocket is designed for three-point contact between the holder and carbide insert.

The carbide insert is secured in the pocket with a centrally located screw, creating a precise and reliable connection. For this purpose, and despite the narrow ridge width, small counterbores have been added to the design of the carbide insert. The screw head that is countersunk as a result does not produce interfering contours and enables reliable grooving even on a collar or directly on the spindle, the company says. This is made possible thanks to pressing technologies in the blank manufacturing sector.

The system allows free chip flow at grooving depths of as much as 6.5 mm (0.256”) and grooving widths of 2 to 5 mm (0.079” to 0.207”). The equipment can be used in a range of applications, including grooving, side-turning and copying of shaped grooves, even for materials of medium and higher strengths.
