Hwacheon Machinery America offers a big bore turning center line designed for machining large oil-field components. Based on its Hi-Tech 550, 700, and 850 horizontal turning centers, the machines are said to provide effective spindle torque to cut materials with diameters ranging to 36" and lengths greater than 216".

The Hi-Tech BB and BB+ turning centers feature through-spindle holes ranging from 7.08" to 14.57" in diameter for large pipes, and large air chucks can be fitted at the front and back of the spindle. The range includes the HT-550BB with a 7.08" through-spindle hole; the HT-700BB and the HT-700BB+ with 7.08" and 11.61" through-spindle holes, respectively; and the HT-850BB and HT-850BB+ with 11.61" and 14.57" through-spindle holes, respectively. Spindle noses are available in ASA A2-15 to A2-20, and long-bed versions are available from 84" to 216".

The four-speed automatic transmission system enables low-speed, high-torque turning as well as high speed machining. Recuperative cylindrical roller bearings and the multiple thrust angular bearing enable hard turning of tough alloys. The spindle can be geared down for extra torque to process a range of materials. All machines feature Hwacheon’s heavily ribbed torque-tube design.

The bed frames are made of Meehanite castings to minimize heat distortion. Plus, all guideways are designed as solid box ways to maintain rigidity and precision during prolonged, heavy operations. Hwacheon’s advanced thermal displacement control is designed to prevent deteriorating machining tolerances due to thermal displacement, and a jet of lubrication is constantly applied to the spindle bearing for cooling, prolonged machine life and machining precision.

According to the company, a 13" turret width and a 31" boring bar capacity make the turning centers well-suited for cutting large parts include a. In addition, the machines can handle multitasking machining with a Y-axis head that features a 9" stroke and a rapid positioning speed of 10 m/min.

Heavy-duty bearings in the turning center’s tailstock are designed for precision, even after prolonged turning on heavy workpieces, the company says. Other features include quill diameters ranging from 120 to 160 mm, steady rest capacity of 20", and an optional air chuck.

Each turning center is controlled by the FANUC 0i control with Manual Guide i, a dialog-based programming system. The data presents a 3D model of the work and process, providing a preview of the actual outcome.
