Kyocera’s CA4505 and CA4515 CVD coated carbide grades of indexable cutting tool inserts are designed for machining gray and nodular (ductile) cast iron. Featuring the company’s Bright Black coating technology, the CA45-series is said to offer resistance to premature insert wear and fractures. Advantages of the series include improved CVD coating adhesion for enhanced anti-peeling performance through optimal layer composition. The layers consist of an ultra-fine TiCN layer, an alpha-alumina layer and a proprietary, special-surface top layer. The special-surface top layer treatment reduces material build-up on the insert cutting edge and improves surface finishes on the workpiece, while reducing insert chipping during the machining process, the company says. The two grades cover a variety of applications for machining gray and nodular cast iron. The company recommends CA4505 for continuous machining because it offers excellent wear resistance. CA4515 is recommended for continuous or interrupted general-purpose machining.
