High-Power Horizontal Turning Centers

The company’s new family of Puma 240 horizontal turning centers power through heavy and interrupted cuts in hard-to-machine metals with no sacrifice-to-surface finish or precision, according to the company. With its new, extended-bed model, it can machine parts with maximum dimensions of 16" diameter x 25. 5" long or barstock to 3".

A heavy, strategically ribbed cast iron bed is said to provide the rigidity to maintain close tolerances in tough cuts. Its slant bed enhances rigidity, which is said to allow easy access to tools, chucks and workpieces, and improve the flow of chips and coolant. According to the company, the saddle and tailstock guideways are located on the same plane to eliminate thermal distortion. Torque tube construction is said to eliminate torsional stresses associated with heavy cuts and provides a through-the-casting conduit for cool air. Its all-Meehanite construction is said to dampen vibrations, while its one-piece construction evenly distributes heat and cutting forces.

The turning centers are available in nine configurations, including models with standard and elongated beds, as well as live tool models with and without subspindles. Standard models are equipped with a 12-station tool turret with a large-diameter, curved coupling. Turret rotation, acceleration and deceleration are controlled by a high-torque servomotor. Unclamp and rotation are almost simultaneous.

The centers with live tooling use BMT-style tooling; the toolholders are mounted directly to the turrets periphery. Spindle motors for the models are 15 hp. All other models are equipped with 25-hp motors. A choice between high- and low-torque motors is now available.
