The SL-20APL from Haas Automation Inc. is a compact lathe with an integrated automatic parts loader that automatically picks up parts from an external tray and loads them into the lathe for untended turning or flips parts automatically for double-ended machining.

 

The lathe has a maximum cutting capacity of 10.3" x 20" and maximum swing of 23” over the front apron. Standard bar capacity is 2". The machine's 20-hp vector dual-drive spindle spins to 4,000 rpm and provides 154 foot-pounds of torque for heavy cutting. On-the-fly wye-delta switching yields a wide constant-horsepower band for constant surface-feed cuts.

 

Equipped with an A2-6 spindle nose, the SL-20APL features an 8" hydraulic three-jaw chuck and a ten-station bolt-on style tool turret. An optional programmable hydraulic tailstock is available for long-part machining.

 

For versatility, two gripper configurations come standard with the SL-20APL: one for shaft work and one for stacked parts. The shaft gripper handles parts as large as 5" in diameter, and the disc gripper handles parts as large as 7" diameter. Both systems handle parts weighing as much as 15 lbs. The lathe can load raw pieces into the machine and remove completed parts, flip pieces for second operations or wait at the lathe while long shaft pieces are being machined before returning them to the table.

 

The APL is programmed directly through the lathe’s control, and set up using the Haas Intuitive Programming System, which guides the operator through the steps necessary to quickly program the APL. Answering simple questions, the operator enters basic information into the system by either positioning the part grippers and pushing a single button, or entering basic numeric dimensions. All values are calculated automatically by the control.
