By eliminating the need for multiple parts or expensive heaters, high precision hydraulic chucks can provide a compelling alternative to collet or shrink-fit holders in many work environments. NT Tool’s PHC-A Power Hydro Chucks utilize a dual clamping-point system to provide 20-percent more clamping force than equivalent collet holders, and maintain 3-micron accuracy, according to the company.

The oil chamber around the PHC-A’s chucking sleeve absorbs cutting vibrations in a way that the solid metal body of shrink fit and collet holders cannot, which allows for consistently higher accuracy and a smoother work surface. An electromagnetic rust-proof coating—standard for most NT holders —ensures that this accuracy is maintained throughout the life of the holder.

Setup is designed to be quick and easy, requiring nothing more than a one-handed hex wrench to clamp the cutting tool. This allows for minimal downtime and eliminates the risk of burn injuries associated with shrink-fit chucking. The simplicity of the system also serves to eliminate human error, ensuring the same gripping force regardless of who is tightening the chuck.

Because of their considerable clamping strength and ability to reduce chattering while cutting, the PHC-A model can satisfy many machining needs, the company says. If working in narrow spaces is a concern, the same dual clamping-point hydraulic system is also available in the PHC-S Slim Hydro Chuck model, which provides all the same benefits, but in a narrow body reminiscent of a shrink fit holder.

The PHC-A is available in HSK, CAT (standard and two-face contact), BT (standard and two-face contact), and UTS shank styles. They are offered in both inch sizes (1/4” diameter to 1¼” diameter) and metric sizes (3-mm diameter to 32-mm diameter), with collet compatibility, if desired. Custom sizes are readily accommodated.
