Sinker EDM Technology Provides Faster Roughing of Deep Ribs

Makino’s SuperSpark IV sinker EDM reduces roughing times in deep-rib applications.

Article From: 2/6/2012 Modern Machine Shop

Makino’s SuperSpark IV sinker EDM reduces roughing times in deep-rib applications. A combination of shortened jump cycles and spark-gap adaptive power control improves process efficiency and productivity. According to the company, more than 60 percent of total process time is spent out of the cut during standard sinker EDM jump cycles. The SuperSpark is said to more than double actual cutting time because its shortened jump height requires less time for electrodes to return to the workpiece.

In addition, the spark-gap adaptive power control enables electrodes to discharge sparks during the jump cycle for continuous cutting throughout the EDM process. As the electrode depth increases, the power and spark gap decreases to prevent overburn. Together, these technologies are designed to improve total machining times.
