Turning Grades For Finishing, Semi-Roughing Stainless Steel

Article From: 9/19/2007 Modern Machine Shop

Valenite LLC introduces two ValPro tooling grades: the VP8515 and VP8525 MT-CVD series of inserts. Both are engineered for high speed, high-productivity turning operations for finishing and semi-finishing 304 and 316 stainless steels, Inconel and heat-resistant alloys. The VP8515 is used for finishing operations, while the VP8525 is used for general semi-roughing/finishing. The VP8515 grade is used for cutting at speeds faster than 200 m per minute at typical finishing cut depths, making it suited for continuous turning of austenitic and duplex stainless steels. This grade is available with F5, M4, M6, M8, PM2 and PM5 geometries. It also has a thin, yellow TiN outer coating for visual wear identification, an Al2O3 layer for thermal protection and a fine, MT-CVD TiCN coating to prevent flaking and reduce flank wear. The VP8525 offers cutting speeds faster than 150 m per minute with medium to large cutting depths. The inserts are available with M4, M6, M8, R9, PM4 and PM5 geometries. It is suited for general M-class turning—continuous or intermittent cutting of austenitic and duplex stainless steels. This grade's coating is similar to that of the finishing grade.
