Sending parts out for hot oxide finishing can be costly and bothersome, creating gaps in ISO and JIT programs. Today’s in-house blackening is convenient, fast and safe. In house cold blackening systems restore your control over part finishing and often pay for themselves in 3-9 months. There is no drain pollution or safety problems. Systems are available for all iron and non-stainless steels. Pre-engineered finishing systems supplied complete start with the BK-TT mini TruTemp or BK-1 Mini Presto® Black 5 gallon line for tool room scale or limited production scale blackening. The BC-20 tank system has large production line features without space and cost requirements. The 40 gallon BC-40 tank line utilizes eight heavy duty welded tanks. The 100 gallon BC-100 tank line utilizes 100 gallon heavy duty welded tanks.

In-House Blackening - The reasons for installing an in-house cold blackening system are many and varied. For most new users it means achieving better control of finishing quality, production scheduling, ISO compliance, not to mention the improved cost efficiencies.
Pre-Engineered Finishing Systems - Birchwood Casey is a leading developer of turnkey finishing systems and processes, including blackening and antiquing for today's modern machine shops,
Metal Cleaners from Birchwood Casey Improve Black Oxide Finish
Metal surface cleaners and conditioners from Birchwood Casey are designed to improve black oxide coating and other metal finishing processes by removing surface soils.
Three Coating Options for Iron and Steel
The Tru Temp process operates at 200°F and produces a high quality black finish.
Corrosion Inhibitors
Birchwood Casey offers a line of eight different aqueous and solvent-based inhibitors and sealants to prevent rust and corrosion on all metal surfaces. Providing precise corrosion resistance, rust preventative and corrosion inhibiting products enable selection according to needs for lubricity, dryness and decorative appeal.
Room Temperature Blackening Products
Birchwood Casey’s line of room temperature blackening products and processes for decorative finishing of a range of metal substrates is featured in a brochure that shows detailed pictures of finished parts using the company's line of metal finishing products. These products include Presto Black Room Temp blackening process for iron/steel surfaces, used to form a clean, satin black metal surface providing strong corrosion resistance to all kinds of tooling and machine components. .
Shop Saves Time, Money By Moving Part Finishing In-House
Today’s highly automated machining centers deliver completed parts faster than ever. However, once a part is machined, if the next step requires finishing, time gained on the machining end can be lost on the finishing end. This has changed for motion control component manufacturer Zero-Max Inc.
Low Temperature Black Oxide
Tru Temp low temperature black oxide protects critical components used for drilling, production and refining petrochemicals and natural gas. For critical parts in storage or shipment, this low temp finishing process offers break-in lubricity, anti-galling protection and creates a protective barrier against corrosion.
This process is especially good for components manufactured to tight tolerances, yet doesn't affect function.
Part Finishing System
Birchwood Casey's BC40 Tru Temp finishing system uses a seven-tank process line and a two-step chemistry. The system produces a true black magnetite finish of 0. 000020" thickness, satin black in appearance and equal to that of conventional hot black oxide.
Packaging Neutralizes Corrosive Elements
Birchwood Casey's Intercept SPS packaging, which creates a protective, corrosion-free zone around metal parts stored inside. The packaging material has the ability to neutralize and remove corrosive elements in the air around the part stored inside without the use of chemicals, thereby protecting them from corrosion for long periods.
This corrosion-resistant packaging is for all types of products that are shipped overseas, stored for long periods in dealer warehouses or stored outdoors.
Cleaner Lifts Oils From Parts
Safe Scrub OS split cleaner is designed for use in difficult cleaning applications to remove oil and surface soils that are difficult to emulsify. The cleaner lifts oils from iron and steel parts, then floats the oil residue to the liquid surface for removal from the tank by an oil skimmer or coalescing filter, thereby maximizing the working life of the cleaning solution.
Heavier mineral oils, waxes and drawing lubricants are difficult to emulsify, and they shorten the working life of an emulsifying cleaner.
Black Oxide Eliminates Salt Bloom
Tru TempTM low-temperature black oxide process allows users to produce high quality black finishes without salt bloom. Salt bloom is the white powder that often appears in recessed areas and holes on hot oxide finished parts. It occurs because ordinary hot oxide baths are viscous and difficult to rinse.
