Seco Tools enables its customers to achieve versatility, reliability and exceptional wear resistance in cast iron machining with its new Duratomic-coated TK1001 and TK2001 insert grades. These grades also allow for faster cutting speeds and effectively reduce the number of grades needed in cast iron applications.
With Seco’s exclusive Duratomic process, aluminum and oxygen are manipulated at the atomic level to create insert coatings with unmatched toughness and abrasion resistance. In addition to featuring Duratomic technology, the latest TK grades incorporate new substrates that further enhance hardness levels and wear resistance.
TK1001 is a hard, fine-grained tungsten carbide turning grade with low binder phase content. Designed primarily for tackling gray cast iron up to semi-stable conditions and nodular cast iron under stable conditions, TK1001 also works on hardened steels in the 40 – 45 Rc range, due to its hard substrate. The grade can handle light interruptions, but its intent is for long, uninterrupted cuts, where it achieves high productivity, long tool life and the stability needed for confident unattended machining. Examples of components made utilizing TK1001 include cylinders, brake drums, hubs, housings, brake discs and fittings.
TK2001 is a fine-grained tungsten carbide turning grade with high toughness. Mainly intended for machining nodular cast iron and handling gray cast iron on heavy interrupted cuts, TK2001 also offers strong performance in interrupted finishing operations due to its tough substrate and extra edge toughness. Furthermore, it offers long, predictable tool life in unstable conditions requiring high-edge security. Examples of components made utilizing TK2001 include differential housings, camshafts, clutches, wheel hubs, shafts and pulleys.
The new TK grades are available via 211 new inserts in a wide variety of geometries and chip grooves, ensuring applicability across a broad range of operations.

The new expansive range of 335.25 disc mills from Seco Tools tackles large slot widths. The versatile range of mills is well suited for machining a wide variety of components and materials. Part processing versatility, as well as tool cost savings, are further increased with the ability to use the mills for slotting, side milling, face milling, back facing, helical interpolating, circular interpolating, copy plunging, T-slot machining and cut-off operations.
With its multiple functionality, the 335.25 range of mills translates into fewer tool changes and smaller tool inventories. Plus, the mills feature inserts incorporating a V-shape concept that creates an optimized cutting geometry to reduce machining forces and noise. Cutting parameters can then be maximized for high productivity, even in unstable conditions. The free-cutting four-sided insert geometries, offered in several grades, also feature wiper flats for fine surface finishes and chip flow optimization, along with various corner radii from 0.031” to 0.236” (0.8 mm to 6 mm).
Seco’s 335.25 disc mills handle slot widths as large as 1” (25 mm). The mills can be configured with fixed pockets and use central coolant or with adjustable pockets for even greater versatility.

Seco Tools' new Duratomic-grade DP3000 range of indexable insert drills are designed for very high feeds and speeds. The grade provides a balance of heat resistance, wear resistance and strength, making it ideal for holemaking in a wide variety of materials.
Developed for use with Perfomax® indexable drills, the grade’s properties allow it to provide reliable, cost-effective and productive performance, even in challenging situations such as angled entrances and interrupted cuts.
Available in all Perfomax insert geometries and sizes, DP3000 increases tool life and allows for the use of more aggressive cutting data. The grade’s balance of toughness and strength originate from concentrating its cobalt content near the surface of the substrate, coupled with a Duratomic coating comprised of titanium carbon nitride (TiCN) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3).
All Perfomax drills feature strong square inserts and offer high stability. Their low friction coating and unique chip flute design optimizes chip removal rates to boost productivity and process reliability. The tools’ versatility helps to reduce inventory and production costs.

Seco Tools introduced its original Minimaster line of end mills with replaceable carbide inserts nearly 25 years ago. The company's new Minimaster® Plus offers advanced features for tackling the most demanding of milling applications in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and other difficult-to-machine materials.
The most notable new feature on the Minimaster Plus is the high-precision interface between the replaceable carbide insert and the steel shank. The insert has an internal thread and external taper, while the shank has an internal taper with a threaded center pin for added reliability and stability as well as minimized run-out.
Additionally, a new axial stop on the shank increases repeatability and productivity by allowing end users to replace an insert without having to remove the tool from machine spindles. The new insert then repositions axially within 25 microns.
Intended for general machining in the aerospace, power generation, die and mold, automotive and medical industries, the highly productive Minimaster Plus replaceable tip milling system makes tool-length re-measurement obsolete. The milling system offers a large selection of inserts and shanks for a multitude of tough milling applications.
Twenty-four versions of the shank are available, along with square shoulder and ball nose inserts that have through-tool coolant on all two and three flute designs for excellent cooling and efficient chip removal.
Inserts come in two grades for machining all types of materials and E- and M-geometries for a smooth cutting design. Insert diameters range from 0.375” to 0.625”, and corner radii are available from 0.0157” to 0.122” to match a variety of design requirements.

Pigging Out: High Feed Machining Techniques For Small Cutters

Chipbreaker With High Cutting Speeds

This grade was developed using Seco's Duratomic process, where the crystalline structure is manipulated at the atomic level to produce a very durable coating.
Upgrade To Indexable Insert Drills
Seco Tools has improved the Perfomax indexable insert drills, including a changed helix for improved productivity and chip evacuation; a refined core for improved strength and stability; and an improved drill point to increase tool life and achieve better tolerance, the company says. The drills feature an optimized chip flute design, a low friction-coated drill body and strong insets.
Wiper Geometries For High-Feed Milling
Helix wiper geometries for operations in high-feed machining of case-hardened steels where standard wipers cannot be used because of vibrations caused by a weak setup or lower radial cutting forces. Seco's Helix concept is designed to reduce vibrations, increase tool life and the parts produced per cutting edge. It has a wiper on both sides of the corner radii (as the standard), but the protection chamfer is twisted from negative to positive, or from positive to negative.
Coated CBN Inserts
Seco Tools Inc. 's coated insert, CBN160C, is particularly suited for heavy interrupted and high-speed operations in finishing case hardened steel. The insert was designed to increase speed yet lower production costs. The insert features a Ti(Si)N "C" coating, which improves wear resistance and increases tool life so that higher speeds and feeds can be achieved, according to the company.
Round Insert Cutter Range
Seco Tools Inc. offers round insert cutters suitable for roughing and semi-finishing in face- and copy-milling applications. The cutters feature a hard nickel coating (700+ Vickers) on the cutter body, which increases protection from chip wear, offers longer tool life and aids in chip evacuation.
Keeping the Tradition
The attention that is given to advanced techniques such as turning materials of high hardness, ultra-precision turning and dry and high-speed turning may lead one to believe that traditional ISO turning techniques are at a standstill. The reality is that ongoing innovations keep traditional methods at the forefront.
Single Insert Dispenser
The SecoPoint single insert dispenser (SID) stores as many as 20 inserts, dispensing one at a time. It is designed specifically to work in conjunction with the company's SmartDrawer cabinet, which can accommodate 64 SIDs per drawer, providing a capacity of as many as 1,280 inserts per drawer. The SID supports the most popular tool sizes and is useful for most carbide inserts used in milling, turning, threading and grooving applications.
Boring Bars For High Precision

Center Lock CBN Inserts
Seco's line of full-face CBN inserts with a center lock hole provides more edges per insert compared to a standard tipped insert while keeping the insert mounting security with the C-lock hole. The inserts remove the depth-of-cut limitations while maintaining the strength needed for high productivity machining to provide reduced overall cost per cutting edge and increased number of parts produced per insert. These inserts are engineered for a range of applications, including turning, boring and milling, and are offered in grades CBN10 and CBN20.
Direct-Pressed Thread Turning Inserts
Seco-Carboloy has added a general-purpose geometry to its range of Snap Tap thread turning tools called the "A" chipbreaker. It provides consistent machining of numerous thread forms in both steel and stainless steel. As a direct-pressed insert, it is offered in packaging that allows users to purchase as little as two inserts.
Grade Offers Higher Cutting Speed, Longer Tool Life
Seco-Carboloy introduces grade CBN050C offering a new low CBN-content substrate in combination with a PVD coating that allows for machining in the range of 650 to 825 sfm. The inserts are available in solid, full-face and brazed multi-corner and single tip shapes to suit all hard-finish machining techniques. Cutting edges on round inserts, either solid or full-faced, are clearly marked and each cutting edge on solid and multi-corner formats is visibly identified.
Indexable Insert Disc Mills

Seco-Carboloy has improved its popular line of PWB tool presetting machines to include digital imaging features. The digital technology is available on all PWB models including the TM4, TM10 and TM250. The company’s perfoMAX indexable drills are said to enable users to increase productivity and reduce cost by boosting speeds and feeds while avoiding common problems, such as deflection, poor tool life and quality. The drill bodies have been designed for maximum stability to permit high feeds and speeds even at entry, and to resist deflection in the most challenging of applications, according to the company. Features include a large cross-sectional design with added material at the periphery to resist bending under cutting forces, an improved insert-pocket design and inserts with 90-degree corners.
