I just got back to the office from PMTS 2013 in Columbus,Ohio, and what a show it was. Every 2 years the Precision Machined Products Association (PMPA) puts on an industry focused trade show that dove-tails with its technical conference. This has been going on since 2001. Well, if we didn’t think a manufacturing rebound was underway, this week’s event put that rumor to bed.

The convention center in Columbus hosted the largest assembly of exhibitors ever to participate in this biennial industry coning together. More than 250 companies displayed, demonstrated and otherwise showed attendees their goods and services to an interested crowd of precision machined products professionals who made the trip to Columbus.

I was there for the duration, and the atmosphere was as upbeat as I have ever seen it, and I’ve attended since the show’s inception in 2001. Ours is a niche market in the overall scheme of manufacturing, but a critical and healthy niche. Many factors are coming together that make businesses optimistic about the future and encourage investment in better, more efficient means of production--all of which is helping domestic manufacturing recapture its historical place in the global economy.

For the thousands of you who saw this show first hand, you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who were not able to attend, I encourage you to visit PMTS vicariously through its website and perhaps make a note to self to arrange to visit PMTS in 2015. When I left, exhibitors were lining up to apply for space in 2015. That’s an endorsement if ever there was one. Visit pmts.com to remember what you saw or see what you missed.
