According to Gardner Intelligence, the 2019 Gardner Business Index was marked by slowing growth and contraction, but the amount of contraction is smaller than the amount of growth from the past business cycle.

Now that we’re a few months in to 2020, Gardner Intelligence is looking back at data from the 2019 Gardner Business Index (GBI) to review how the year went for manufacturers and explain how businesses can apply it to their plans for 2020.

Following an all-time high in early 2018, the GBI’s growth slowed through the rest of the year and into 2019 as Gardner Intelligence predicted, eventually dipping into contractionary territory. While this might seem alarming, the amount of contraction is far smaller than the growth experienced over this past business cycle. As Gardner Intelligence Chief Economist and Director of Analytics Michael Guckes puts it, “If you take 30-plus steps up a staircase, then take five or six steps back down, you’re still two-and-a-half stories up.”
