Production Machining’s August Digital Edition is now available. This issue features emphasis topics of Cutting Tools and Workholding with special coverage focusing on the upcoming International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in September. The cover story reviews the fundamentals of chip control, looking into the strategies for managing chips to protect the production process, from tool life to product quality. For our other feature, we look at how square-pole, electro-permanent magnets are being applied beyond their traditional niche in surface grinding applications, offering secure workholding in five-sided machining.

This issue also features extensive IMTS pre-show coverage, including an intro article for show prep and coverage of an assortment of products, particularly applicable to PM readers, that will be on display at the show.

Our Tech Brief discusses a new line of turret-adapted clamping units featuring quick-change capable adapters made for a shop’s specific brand of CNC lathes. It is designed to reduce tooling costs as well as concerns about toolholder rigidity.

This month’s Case in Point visits a machining, welding and assembly facility that improved efficiency with the implementation of a new Swiss-type CNC lathe and an automatic, magazine-style bar feeder.

Finally, the Last Word column discusses how automation is an expanding segment of manufacturing, driven by the traditional need for more efficient and reliable production processes.
