Sometimes taking a break from the shop and getting away from the everyday grind can do a lot of good. For some, this might involve a vacation to clear the mind. But often, dedicated employees find it hard to remove themselves completely from the work environment for an extended period of time.

At the end of February, I attended PMPA’s Management Update conference, which was a great compromise for those who could use a break but still wanted to help their business. Held at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., over an extended weekend, this year’s conference brought together a strong lineup of speakers with leadership strategies to help build better management teams and more effective companies.

Some presentations were focused on implementing strategies for more effective business relationships and practices. These included Disney Institute’s “Disney’s Approach to Business Excellence,” as well as reviews of workforce development strategies, human capital analytics, building effective sales teams, and lean process improvement.

Other sessions provided a more general overview of business, taking a look at the near-term economic outlook, labor law challenges, EPA and OSHA regulatory changes, and activity on Capitol Hill.

Beyond the business sessions, the networking opportunities during breaks or meals allowed business owners and managers to share how they are meeting their own challenges. The conference was time well spent; all business leaders in our industry should consider attending these events.
