Absolute Machine Tool’s Tongtai VTX-5 vertical machining center is a fixed column, moving table CNC milling and tapping center designed for high-volume machining. It features X, Y and Z axis travel of 20" × 15.7" × 11.8" (508 mm × 398 mm × 300 mm). Roller-type linear slideways are said to maximize rigidity. Class 3, 1(25 mm) diameter ballscrews with a double nut pre-loaded design enable a traverse rate of as much as 2,362 ipm for all axes. Also, an Absolute Pulse Coder servo system enables the machine to be started from any position.

The machine is equipped with either a 21-tool turret-type or 20-tool arm-type automatic tool changing system. According to the company, with the turret-type, change times are 1.4 seconds tool-to-tool and 1.9 seconds chip-to-chip. The arm-type changer tool change times are 0.8 seconds and 1.3 seconds chip-to-chip.

The machines’ 7.5 horsepower, 12,000 rpm direct drive spindle provides rigid tap speeds as fast as 6,000 rpm. An optional 24,000-rpm direct drive spindle delivers cutting speeds for aluminum and magnesium parts as well as graphite. Through-spindle coolant capability is standard, as is a spindle chiller. The machines’ bed flushing system is said to provide efficient chip removal.
