The company’s Penta Cut insert is a tool with five cutting edges that can be used for parting off, precision grooving, lateral turning and even threading operations. The company is expanding the product line to include modular adaptors, blade adaptors for large overhangs and adaptors for use on Davenport and Brown & Sharp machines. The new Modular Grip adaptor, PCADR/L 24N, can be mounted in all of the toolholders, and it accepts adaptors from the company’s Grip product lines.

A three-screw mounting system allows the operator to switch between adaptor families or different width adaptors for the proper insert. The toolholder never has to be removed from the machine turret, which saves setup time when changes are made, according to the company.

The adapter is capable of holding a range of insert widths between 0.020" and 0.125" in the same adaptor. It is said that grooving and part off depths to 0.236" are possible with this family of tools. All of the adaptors now come with the company’s Hard Touch surface treatment, which is a nickel-based coating that is impervious to rust and corrosion. Its hardness (more than 60 HRC) promotes longer tool life by preventing chip erosion and heat buildup from chip contact, the company says.

For use where a larger overhang is encountered, the PCHBR/L adaptor blade is a common blade-style toolholder that fits into most of the standard tool blocks that accept 26-mm and 32-mm blades, such as the SGTBU style. This makes the Penta Cut available for use on all standard CNC lathes. The adapter blade is interchangeable with all Cut Grip, Do Grip, Heli Grip and Top Grip adaptor blades and has five cutting edges. The insert design allows for the use of all the cutting edges even if as many as four of the five edges have been damaged or broken, according to the company.
