Gundrilling Machine Improves Hole Straightness

IMTS 2018: Kays Engineering’s Eldorado M75-30T is a twin-spindle gundrilling machine with a redesigned counter-rotation fixture.

Kays Engineering’s Eldorado M75-30T is a twin-spindle gundrilling machine with a redesigned counter-rotation fixture. The workpiece can be rotated in the opposite direction of the drill rotation to maximize the effectiveness of the gundrilling operation. This improves the straightness of the drilled hole and reduces drill drift. The counter-rotation fixture features an improved gearbox and motor mount that reduces vibration. The design introduces automatic advance/retract of the entire counter-rotation assembly via a programmable servo, which simplifies part loading and unloading and reduces cycle time.

The machine has a drilling capacity of 0.75" (19 mm) in diameter and a 30" (762-mm) maximum drilling depth. Its two spindles use independent spindle control to perform independent drilling cycles at the same time. The machine incorporates flame-hardened, ground cast iron boxways and hand-scraped spindle housings. Compared to linear guideways and milled surfaces, this construction improves vibration damping and extends tool life.

The up-and-coming technologies hinted at during previous shows have now arrived, and they are being accepted as part of the now-standard means of making parts.
