The company will introduce its new STG five-axis tool and cutter grinder. The STG will be of particular interest to the manufacturers of large diameter, solid carbide tools. The STG has more than 20 hp available to the grinding spindle. Extensive finite element analysis on the machine components has led to machine stiffness that offers superior surface finish and precision. Star has selected the NUM CNC control and NUMROTO software. The NUM 1050 control with its high precision, fast servo loop is designed for high speed machining. Although tool grinding does not require high speed moves, the feedback mechanism, at slower speeds, gives greater control and precision. The NUMROTO software program provides a grinding simulation, allowing operators to grind a virtual tool before the grinding wheel touches the part. This virtual grinding greatly increases productive spindle time and reduces wasted parts. The STG comes with Heidenhain glass scales for axis positioning feedback. The Heidenhain scales are coupled with the Marposs probing system. With a traditional part probe and the wheel probing system, the STG is fully capable of truing the wheels on board and then measuring the wheels for grinding. For production, the STG options include a robotic loader, automatic wheel changer and a high pressure coolant system for high speed fluting.
