FAQ: Controls & Software

What is the best ERP system for my shop?

Nothing is quite as complex as modern information technology management. Developing and installing an ERP system is among the most daunting tasks in manufacturing today. The mountain of detail and the fast pace of change in the computer and software world leave even the most knowledgeable experts wondering about choices. Therefore, picking the right vendors and/or consultants is crucial.

Not only will there be differences in the detail level of the software used, but sometimes compatibility is an issue. A custom system might do some things that a shrink-wrapped product may not. This is true of all vendors and needs to be understood up front in the initial discussions. Before evaluating vendors, consultants and software options, you must understand, in detail, what your system needs are and what options you will need in the future. Read “Choosing ERP Vendors And Consultants: It's All About The Right Fit” for a rundown of how to figure these out.

Mastercam is a Windows-based CAD/CAM package developed by CNC Software Inc. (Tolland, Conn.). It can be used for two- through five-axis milling and turning; two- and four-axis wire EDM; 2D and 3D design, surface and solid modeling; artistic relief cutting; and 2D and 3D routing.

Should I program manually or using CAM?

Programming CNC machines by hand is not always a desirable practice. It can be a time-consuming and exhausting process that leads to bottlenecks, human error, machine crashes and, inevitably, turning away lucrative business. Investing in CAM software can make a big difference when it comes to programming.
