The Sunnen SV-30 honing series is for engine cylinder blocks, liners and other parts. The machine’s cylinder diameter ranges from 0.75" to 8" (19 mm to 200 mm), and the company’s GH-LF tooling is required for automatic step-and-repeat operations. The machine is compatible with the company's large diameter tooling, including diamond abrasive hone heads and brushes, GHTS hone heads for two-stage honing with CBN or diamond abrasives, and GHSS single-stage hone heads with CBN or diamond abrasives and brushes.

The PC control enables automatic bore-to-bore geometry and finish. The 15" (381 mm) touchscreen enables a real-time display of the cross section. The control can store more than 1000 part setup programs and a USB port enables offline setup file storage. The programmable Auto-Dwell feature corrects taper in the bore for unattended operation, while tools or abrasives complete roughing and finishing operations in one pass, according to the company.

The machine includes spindle reversal, standard bore setup (0.010", 0.020", 0.030") and automatic tool protection. Models include either a 6-horsepower (4.5-kilowatts) servo or a 5.5-horsepower (4.1-kilowatts) induction spindle motor, producing speeds ranging 50-600 rpm. A 3.4-horsepower (2.5-kilowatts) servo ballscrew system produces as many as 100 vertical strokes per minute with a travel of as much as 27.75" (705 mm). A work envelope of 48" × 30" (1219 mm × 760 mm) enables the processing of larger parts.

Positioning of the honing column on its 32" (813 mm) X-axis is accomplished with a servomotor or a manual handwheel located below the user station. The machine includes a 55-gallon (208-liter) internal coolant system with two steel cartridge filters, a pump and a filter status gauge. The machine is equipped with LED lighting as well as the latest safety features including light curtain, interlocked front door, stainless guarding around the work envelope and safety PLC. Options include a T-slot base, manual rollover cradle for engine blocks and an automation interface.
