Monaghan Powdered Metal Taps Offer Economical Alternative to Solid Carbide

Monaghan Tooling Group provides Vergnano P-Series powdered metal taps as a cost-effective solution for tapping applications in harder materials.

Monaghan Tooling Group’s Vergnano P-Series powdered metal (PM) taps provide a cost-effective alternative to solid carbide in a wide range of tapping applications. Manufactured through a sintering process, PM taps feature a fine-grained, uniform structure that provides higher hardness than conventional HSS while maintaining greater toughness than carbide, according to the company. This balance enables them to perform well in harder materials — up to 45 HRC — while also handling interrupted cuts and less rigid setups where carbide may be prone to failure.

With similar tool life in many applications, this translates into a lower cost per part, particularly in high-volume or variable-condition environments.

Vergnano P-Series taps are available in cutting and forming styles, covering sizes from 1-40 mm (0.0393-1.5748") with thread forms including M, MF, UNC, UNF and G.

To assist with application selection, Vergnano offers TAppFinder, an online tool that helps the user identify optimal tap designs based on material, hole type and tolerance requirements. Custom tap solutions are also available.
