Rollomatic’s GrindSmart 660XW is a hybrid, 6‐axis tool and peel grinding machine that enables users to use cost‐effective and advanced lean manufacturing principles for ultralean grinding processes. The machine includes a 6‐position wheel changer and linear motors on all axes.

This hybrid model offers combination grinding of tool geometries as well as peel grinding for neck, plunge and other blank prep operations. It features a traveling high‐speed workhead, with peel grinding for blank preparation and neck grinding included in the same chucking.

Peel grinding includes blank preparation for common‐shank rotary cutting tools, neck grinding for long‐reach mold and die endmills, and plunge grinding operations. The company says the machine includes a steady rest system designed for grinding endmills as well as for drill point grinding. The 20-hp spindle motor is said to enable synchronous grinding.

The company says the machine’s thermal stability is exceptionally good due to its 6‐axis design and double‐skin coolant enclosure. It is also said to have demonstrated a high Cpk process capability index for any tool grinding machine. The grinding size ranges from microsize to 1/2" (12.7 mm).
