Pacific Precision, Inc. is a family-run company headquartered in San Dimas, California, just a few miles east of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1981 by T. R. and Linda Phillips, with a tremendous amount of help from their late son, Scott.

The company began as a small job shop with two used Swiss screw machines and a brand new Hardinge machining center. Within a few years, the couple’s youngest son, Tom, joined the company full time after graduating from college. The business has since evolved into a full-scale CNC facility featuring single- and subspindle Swiss-type screw machines with live tooling, as well as CAM capability when needed.

Today, the company machines high-precision components for the medical industry, particularly surgical instruments, orthopedic and dental implants, and orthodontic hardware. “Our long-term, dedicated employees have been a key aspect of the company’s continued success,” says Mr. Phillips.

Mr. Phillips and his wife are semi-retired as of March 2004, yet still provide consultation from their home office in Camp Verde, Arizona. Tom Phillips now manages the day-to-day operations in California.

“In addition to the medical market, we work with aerospace, electronics, precision welding and a range of general machining,” says the younger Mr. Phillips, the firm’s operations manager. With a staff of 30, the company’s capabilities include CNC milling, a CNC lathe department and full secondary operations, including microscope deburring and clean-room assembly. The company is ISO 9001-2000 certified and FDA-registered.

A long-time PMPA member, Pacific Precision is well-represented at the association’s national and local meetings. “We’ve always felt that PMPA has done an outstanding job with its speaker and topic selections,” explains Mr. Phillips.

“The networking and the Listserve are, by far, the two most useful tools to us,” he continues. “By networking with our peers and sharing information, we’ve continued to stay on the cutting edge of the world market

“We give the Listserve two thumbs up,” the operations manager notes. “We use it and contribute to it for a variety of reasons. The Listserve was a great resource when we were working toward our ISO certification. And now we’re using it to help with our lean manufacturing.”

Tom Phillips sums it up: “PMPA is an integral part of our goal to be a leader in new technology and higher quality. The success of our customers and the integrity of their products continue to be our highest priorities.”
