One sure way to compare your business with other similar shops is to take the Top Shops benchmarking survey. This initiative has been prepared in conjunction with MPI Group, the parent company of the Manufacturing and Management Performance Institutes and my sister publication, Modern Machine Shop. It is designed to serve as a comparator for shopfloor strategies and business approaches among similar types of businesses to your own. Not only will it serve as a baseline report card of sorts, but the hard data you report and you receive can be a solid starting point from which to identify and prioritize ongoing improvement efforts.

Key to the success of this benchmarking survey is your participation. It is four pages and 50 questions. We estimate it will take about an hour to complete. This is not a cursory effort and obviously the broader the participation the better the results will be. When the link goes dark on February 15, the data will be compiled and sent to all participating shops at no charge.
