Mazak Corp. added the Mazatrol SmoothG CNC and Smooth Technology software to its VTC-330C vertical machining center. The control complements the machine’s traveling-column design, automatic tool changer and 40-taper spindle, all of which combine to enable fast cycle times and accurate machining for long and heavy workpieces, the company says.
The VMCcan use both EIA/ISO and conversational programming to enable speed and accuracy to complex part production. Other features include a pivoting CNC panel and 19" multi-touch LCD control screen. A CFast memory card, which can store as much as 32 GB, is also included with the upgrade.
The control complements the existing machine platform, which delivers a standard 15,000-rpm, 30-hp 40-taper spindle capable of a variety of metalcutting applications. Additionally, the machine and waycover design is said to provide 1,582 ipm rapid feed rates on all axes. Its fixed 78.74" × 30" table provides process flexibility for a range of applications, while an optional center partition can divide the work envelope to enable the machine to be in cycle in one area while loading, unloading or setting up a part in the other. The machine’s axis travels are 65.35" in X, 30" in Y and 25.6" in Z.
Manufacturers are said to be able to double the standard 24-tool automatic tool changer’s capacity with an optional 48-tool magazine or upgrade the spindle to a 50-hp, 20,000-rpm integral spindle. Plus, standard integration of Intelligent Thermal Shield (ITS) software maintains machine accuracy in a range of factory environments. The machine can also be integrated into robotically loaded solutions provided by the company’s automation systems.
